Big Swell, Dec 2011

Vizag can get some big waves from time to time.  This is during a typhoon that rolled through at the end of last year.  If you are an adrenaline junkie these are your kind of waves.  I had one of the best rides of my life durning this swell.  I also broke one of my favorite boards, it happens!  Here is a picture of what we paddled out into... Surfing ROCKS!

RK Beach, Vizag

Rama Krishna Beach - beach break, short rights and lefts, easy paddle out!  This break is right in the heart of Visakhapatnam city.  Translation: not the cleanest beach.  However, when the swell is coming in from the north, it brings clean, fresh water and makes this spot one of the best beach breaks we have in Vizag.

Rama Krishna Beach

Beach breaks at Rama Krishna Beach in January!  It's hard to believe but we have had decent knee high plus waves.   Opposite the local YMCA the wave breaks fast left and closes out.  Makes for some great fun and is always guaranteed to draw a crowd.  RK Beach has three locations to check out.  (1-YMCA, 2- Submarine, 3- Novotel)

Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka

When the surf is flat in Vizag, there are beautiful beaches nearby.  My family and I took a surfing vacation to Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka.  The surfing was amazing, the water clear, and the food amazing...culture awesome.  We will definitely go back.  We stayed at Drifters Hotel. ($65 per day for a triple/AC during high season)  There are several surf points but my favorite was in front of Mambo's.  Point break off the reef.  Head high both right and left.  The wave peaks suddenly off the reef making for steep drops with good power and consistency.

Diving off Rushi Konda

When there is little to no swell go diving... November - February.  Here is what we do in the off season!  This video is taken 100 meters off of Rushi Konda.  We see jellyfish, parrot fish, rays, flat fish of some kind, lobsters, and much more...  Depth is 2 to 5 meters.

Tenneti Park

Here I am at Tenneti Park (Aug: 3.5ft, 9 sec) and loving the swell.  We had a week of pumping waves during the middle of August and had a blast.  This break is awesome when the swell is over 3 ft and period 10-12 secs.  This translates into head high waves at high tide.  It starts off on the point with a high peak that mellows out before it speeds up to the right and shoots you down the line.  You have to watch out for the rocks ahead but the ride is well worth it. (20-40 secs)  If you are near Vizag and the swell is pumping, it would be worth your time to check this break out!

This is my buddy Jay up from Kerala for a week of surfing in Vizag. http://surfingkerala.blogspot.com/  Jay thanks for your encouragement and visit.

Mangamaripeta

If you are surfing India this is a great long right point break that you should checkout.  The local surfers refer to it as Malibu.  It is just in front of a quaint fisherman village.  It is a very easy paddle out and generates constant knee to waist high waves.  The surfers have local connections and can arrange a simple no frills accommodation here.  It is about 15 kms from city-center of Visakhapatnam (Vizag).
